Trenzas
While it is a fictional work, the experiences are taken from my own story, dealing with generational abuse, secrets families keep, and how God heals. It is set against the backdrop of my Hispanic roots, where "la familia" is protected above all.
Unsure of childhood memories, Rose's questions tie emotional triggers to times and places that threaten her new marriage and faith. Did her husband's uncle and mentor molest her? If he did, who would believe her?
Reconstructing her childhood as a grown woman fosters anger, guilt, and shame as Rose struggles to justify a little girl's actions that betray adult comprehension.
Rose decides to tell. The family is divided. Rose's relationship with her in-laws is severed. Family dynamics are shown through her husband's voice in the book. Hoping it is a case of mistaken identity, Ricky wavers between believing his wife and the man who helped raise him.
The story is about rising from victims to survivors.
