A Secret To Die For - Ghostly Tales from the Therapist's Couch

Matt Duff

A ten-year-old murder, a government secret, a soul to be set free. Thomas, a well renowned medium who often helps out Scotland Yard, uses his unique abilities to visit the past. Ten years ago - Joe Williamson, is a prominent journalist with a national newspaper who meets up with an old friend, Stan (an MP in the house of commons), who has discovered a dangerous secret that could get him killed. He hands Joe an envelope. He turns to Joe for help. As Joe watches his friend get into his car and start the engine, a huge explosion erupts, killing Stan instantly. Standing to the side amongst the onlookers, there is a man, dressed in black and on the phone. “It’s done boss!” But, then he spots the envelope sticking out of Joe’s bag and snaps a picture of him as he passes. The present – Thomas Dunn, husband, father and medium. After saying goodbye to his family, he leaves his home, nestled in a mountain village on the edge of Ben Nevis. He is paying a visit to his friend and therapist, Ian Baker, who helps him cope with the emotional turmoil faced in his line of work. Thomas keeps thinking about one of his past cases and needs to share it with Ian. But this visit will be different. Thomas is about to take Ian on an unbelievable journey back into the past, so he can experience the events first hand of one of Thomas’s biggest cases. All Ian has to do is place his hand on Thomas’s arm to be transported, along with Thomas, to witness the chilling events. Flashback – Ten years ago. They find themselves in a muddy field. It is night, the rain torrential, but neither men are affected by the cold or the rain. They are there only to witness. A lone figure, Joe, silhouetted by the moon, confused and stumbling, trudges across the field before them. The two men follow the stranger up to the country road, to a bus stop where a taxi pulls in to talk to him. A friendship made, they head to the village pub and settle in by the fire as Joe tells his story: a murdered friend, his police protection killed, an assassin on his trail who followed him from the train. All the while, Thomas and Ian look on. They can’t be seen, can’t be heard. The past is set. It can’t be changed. Feeling safe, and now with help, Joe heads out with his new friend but unbeknown to him, the assassin has found him. A car chase ensues, narrow country roads, a mountain pass, rammed and smashed, control lost, a barrier destroyed and an upside-down car. But there is no escape this time. The assassin climbs down the embankment. Pat is already dead at the wheel. Joe has managed to crawl out of the burning car. Pleas for his life go unanswered as the assassin takes the envelope and shoots Joe dead before destroying it in the fire. Meanwhile Detective Draper, from Scotland Yard, is investigating the disappearance of a star witness and his protective detail, who were travelling up to Scotland to a safe house. As Thomas and Ian return to the present, Thomas reveals how he first became involved with this case and how he first met Joe. Ten years ago, on a regular ramble through the countryside, Thomas and his soon to be wife, Jemma, came across some police activity. A large, white tent with a forensic team hard at work. Jemma explains to one of the police officers who Thomas is, as Thomas walks off to one side to meet Joe, but to everyone else, it appears he is having a one-sided conversation. After hearing Joe’s story, Thomas shares his findings with Detective Draper.
