A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats

Glenn Ellis

The first public announcement from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding the novel coronavirus advised all Americans not to go to the doctor’s office or emergency room. Instead, it is recommended that you call your doctor for instructions on how to get tested and treated. The CDC further cautioned those with compromised immune systems or chronic conditions to be extra careful. But there was a problem, a big problem: a significant segment of Black Americans didn’t have a doctor!
So, who was the CDC talking to? How was public health messaging provided to a population segment with specific needs and interests during a global pandemic? For almost 20 years, I wrote a weekly column in The Philadelphia Tribune. The Philadelphia Tribune, the nation’s oldest continuously published newspaper, was founded in 1884 to reflect the Black experience in the United States. After approximately five years, my weekly columns became syndicated nationally to Black America.
