My Years as an Alzheimer's Caregiver: transcending loss by nurturing spirit
The book describes the progressive loss of a functionally normal brain through the dual, intertwined lens of science and spirituality. The aim is to provide scientific information and spiritual comfort to caregivers of those living with Alzheimer’s disease. This book is unique in its approach. It blends scientific with spiritual perspectives. A caregiver needs to know the facts of the progression of the disease as it affects the body, particularly the brain, but he or she also needs help in discovering ways in which the soul of the loved one can be nourished by spiritual practice and creative pursuits. The book is based on journal entries which I kept over a span of six years in which I cared for my husband, Edward, who was 84 when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. These entries are incorporated in the exposition of each chapter, providing first-hand, moment to moment experience of our journey through a disease which affects over 6 million Americans.
