Returning is never easy, at least not in this collection of the three Miriam bat Isaac stories in The Deadliest Returns. In “The Bodyguard”, MIRIAM’s brother and erstwhile gladiator BINYAMIN returns home to serve as bodyguard to the son of a wealthy legionnaire. As greedy and lustful as ever, Binyamin becomes involved in a plot to kidnap the legionnaire’s wife and murder the old soldier. In “The Beggar,” NATHANIEL BEN RUBEN returns to Alexandria to learn the fate of the lovechild he left behind. Posing as a beggar despite his enormous fortune, he enlists Miriam to locate his son and thrusts her into a moral dilemma as he lies on his deathbed. In “The Black Pearl”, Miriam sails to Ephesus to return Ben Ruben’s fortune, which he’d acquired from the thieves who heisted the jewels from the Temple of Artemis. As Miriam investigates the sudden death of the HIGH PRIEST and the disappearance of the most valuable jewel, a black pearl, she learns that all is not so pure in the cult of Artemis.
